An American aid worker beheaded by ISIS last year has been posthumously awarded with a college degree from the Indiana university he attended before becoming a humanitarian.
The proud parents of the 26-year-old Peter Kassig, who was brutally decapitated last November, accepted their son's diploma on his behalf Saturday during Butler University's graduation ceremony.
"We wanted to honor him," Butler spokesman Marc Allan told the Daily News. "He was an incredibly hard-working and thoughtful person. We'd like to send a message that he's not forgotten."

Kassig attended Butler University as a political science major from 2011 to 2012, when he found his calling as an emergency medical technician in Tripoli, Lebanon.
The altruistic Indianapolis man, whose full name was Abdul-Rahman Peter Edward Kassig, also served as a Ranger in the U.S. Army.

He had started his own small aid organization and began bringing supplies from Turkey into the Syrian war zone.
Kassig was captured in eastern Syria while making one of those trips on Oct. 1, 2013. ISIS militants released a gruesome 16-minute video of his death in November 2014.
