Some school zones show few promising options

Explore demographics and test results of the schools and school zones that make up New York City’s 32 school districts with The News’ interactive map and graphic. These zones play an important role in the city’s complex school admissions process: Parents can list up to 12 schools — located anywhere in the city — on their kindergartener's application, but kids living in the zone get first dibs. Roughly two-thirds of elementary school students attend public school’s inside their zone. The Daily News analyzed 2013-14 test scores and schools zones, and found 183 of 730 zones give students priority admission to schools where fewer than one in five third-graders passed math. That same measure was true in reading for 259 zones. Read related article....

Select a zone and see the public and charter schools that give third graders living there priority admission. Only schools that admitted third graders last year are included.
