Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young dodged serious injury Monday in Atlanta when a cement truck fell on and crushed the Mercedes he was in.
The 83-year-old Young, the former mayor of Atlanta, Civil Rights activist and three-term Congressman, was taken to a nearby hospital after the 5 p.m. crash near the campus of Georgia Tech, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
The cement mixer overturned and crushed two cars in its path, but police said no one was seriously injured.
"It makes me remember an old spiritual: 'I keep so busy serving my master, I ain't got time to die,'" Young told WSB. "There's a lot that I have to do and want to do before my time comes."
The truck's driver was cited for disobeying a traffic control device and driving too fast for conditions.
Young, born in New Orleans, was an integral member of the Civil Rights movement and a lieutenant of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. He was jailed in Selma, Ala. in 1965.
President Jimmy Carter appointed Young UN ambassador in 1977.
Young could be seen shaking hands with emergency responders as he walked away from the crash. Young told WSBTV he suffered a shin injury.
"He was not driving and was able to walk away from the accident," a Young spokesperson told My Fox Atlanta. "He was treated at the scene and went to the hospital as a precaution. He is doing well and is in good spirits. We appreciate the calls and well wishes."
