A BoltBus that departed from New York City burned in a fiery explosion Monday on the side of the Massachusetts Turnpike.
The driver of the discount coach noticed smoke, pulled over and evacuated passengers about 5 p.m., the company said in a statement.
The Boston-bound bus was sitting on the shoulder of Interstate 90 near Newton when a fireball erupted, blasting out windows, video showed.
Flames roared through the interior as black smoke spiraled into the air.
The 47 passengers were able to grab their luggage and escape before the bus went up, BoltBus’ parent company, Greyhound, said.
No one was injured, and a replacement bus arrived an hour later to get them back on the road.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Firefighters from Newton and Weston were able to knock down the fire quickly, but the explosive incident locked up rush hour traffic for more than an hour.
