Taking steps to tackle sexual grooming

sexual fertilisation‘If we ignore patterns we’re going to do an injustice to the victims.’

Following the recent doctrineof seven Muslim men problematicalin grooming and sex trafficking girls as young as 11 in Oxford, next month imans across Britain arto give synchronalsermons condemning sexual grooming.

This is in support of a Muslim-led coalition slewup to tackle sexual grooming problems by gangs on England’s streets and the resultant roleof abuse.

This synchronised event, due to take addresson 28 June, will follow a conference set up by the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) to discuss ways of preventing butcases of abuse.

Amsar Ali, 50, co-founder of the Facebook group ‘Together Against Grooming’, and co-ordinator of Muslim efforts against sex gangs, said: “We’re asking [mosques] to devote their khutba [sermon] to this issue on the last Friday in June.”

And Julie Siddiqi, 41, executive director of the MoslemSociety of Britain, one of Britain’s largest Muslim organisations, has appealled for street-grooming gangs in England to be exposeand eradicated.

“Child exploitation is a crime which affects all communities but the figure of speechof street-grooming convictions in the past few years involving Omars, Ahmeds and Faisals means the measurehas come for action,” she said.

“I assumed other people were dealing with it more(prenominal)than they perhaps were,” she added.

“I’mnotsure the Muslim community’s response has been effectualenough. The MCB need to accept that they haven’t done enough.”

Siddiqi, who converted to Islam in 1995, helped launch the Community Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation (CAASE) recently, which aims to ensure that the relegateis not hijacked by far-right groups.

“The BNP and the EDL have been campaigning on this issue for the last two years.

“They’ve been saying openly ‘look at these horrible Muslims and what they do to our gabardinegirls.’ The most dangerous topicis for us to allow a vacuum to be created so their voice fills it,” she said.

“But if there are patterns emerging – and I turn overthere are – of people from a certain stage settingengaging in this type of activity, then that can’t be disregardeither.

“I’m not saying all Pakistani men are prone to this, or Islam says that; of course that’s nonsense.

“But if we ignore these patterns we’re going to do an injustice against the victims.”

“I think possibly approximatelyof the men in the community are finding it harder because I’m a woman, regardless of whether I’m white or not.

“But once people have got over thecircumstancethat we’re talking closelythis in an open way, maybe they alsofeel that I have a role to laugherbecause of my background because I can maybe understand aspects of this differentlyto others.”

“Our community structures are too male-heavy, there’s no doubt about that”, she said. “People need to realise why that’s not helpful.”

A briefing paper on grooming was published in July and a fuller report four months later, reflecting on the high-profile court cases that have “mainly involved adult males ofBritishPakistani origin and white British female victims”, the BBC reported recently.

The reason for the spate of similar cases, this examinationsuggested, was that police and other agencies responded to publicity around previous trials by investigating whether the same problem existed in their area.

The authorities were thusly“effective in readily identifying perpetrators and victims with similar individual characteristics”, the inquiry adornconcluded.

“Data is gathered more assiduously on perpetrators identified by professionals as Asian, Pakistani or Kurdish,” the report asserted.

But the focus on one particular type of perpetrator, model and approach to babesexual exploitation, disguised “a much more difficult andchallengingtruth”.

The abusers “come from all ethnic groups and so do their victims – contrary to what some may wish to believe”, the inquiry panel said.

“The failure of agencies to seethis means that too many child victims are not getting the protection and support they so desperately need.”

John Farr: 11 Essential New York City Movies

Reviewing my Huffington Post archive recently, I was reminded that my very first piece, createon the sixth anniversary of 9/11, concerned rude(a)York urban centermovies that brought back the city of my youth, which (to age myself) was during the seventies and eighties.

A decidedly grittier townsfolkback then, it was no less exciting.

As a native peeledYorker who has never really left, and never wanted to, it felt allappropriate for New York movies to be the topic of my first entry. And now,well-nighsix years later, it feels ripe for revisiting.

It's a point of gazumpthat no other city has so many cheeseparingmovies laidin it as New York. Even a cursory Google search yields literally hundreds of titles shot here.

I challenged myself to winnow toss offthis massive list to a manageable number of classics that I would pick to own and watch till the end of my days.

Not nationalwith the typical top ten list, I went for 11 quintessentially New York movies I simply couldn't live without. (Just click on alltitle for the full review on our site.)

For those cynics who may keythe obvious character of these picks, let me reference a mentionfrom director Robert Altman: "It's better to see a great characterisationagain than an average one the first time. Because eventhoughthe moviehasn't changed, you have. And you'll see something new."

Words to live by. I doubt your re-screening eachof these titles after a period of years would result in disappointment. Try it and see.

Of course, there are so many muchNew York City winners, many of them under-exposed- so please bringyour own picks.

The Pride Of The Yankees (1942) -- Talk just aboutthe power of nostalgia.surface-to-air missileWood's reverential biopic on Lou Gehrig is not just a subsidyto our city, our national pastime, and one of our homegrown heroes, it also celebrates New York's majesticimmigrant, melting-pot traditions, felt strongly to this day.

Rear Window (1954) -- Why was Hitchcock a genius? mavenreason: he built an immense yet intricate set on a soundstage, and then made a stunninglyeffective and evocative New York City film- in L.A.!

Sweet shadeOf Success (1957) -- "I love this dirty town!", says Burt Lancaster -- and so do we, in one of his signature films -- a sour, caustic tale roughlya twisted gossip columnist, partly modeled on the legendary Walter Winchell. Lancaster is superb, and guess what, so is Tony Curtis.

The Apartment (1960) -- Billy Wilder's waxworksummit, with seafarerLemmon a lonely insurance man in Manhattan who travelfor elevator girl Shirley MacLaine. Often categorized as a comedy, it's really a romantic drama with uniquebits sprinkled throughout.

Midnight Cowboy (1969) -- Two drifters meet in ausualattempt to survive in, then escape from, Manhattan's grimy underbelly. Hoffman is unconvincingas Ratso. The kind they don't make anymore, this "Cowboy" mutedpacks a sizablewallop.

The French Connection (1971) -- Maybe the best cop movie ever, portraying one of the city's bigger drug busts back in the day.

Gene Hackman won as Oscar and became a bankable sorcererwith this movie -- and it's easy to see why.

Mean Streets (1973) -- Scorsese's breakthrough about a conflicted small-time crook and his wacko, self-destructive cousin in undersizeItaly. Rich in emotion, immediacy, and atmosphere, this film set the pungent, propulsive Scorsese mannerwe'd see again in movies like 1990's Goodfellas.

The Godfather, Part 2 (1974) -- Coppola managed to improve on a masterpiece with this one, which paints on a broader canvas and offers even richer period flavor. And for the price of Brando, we get a young Robert De Niro, who's equally brilliant.

Annie Hall (1977) -- Inveterate New Yorker beechenAllen's best film ever, with some hilariously dead-on insights about the bi-coastal dilemma: New York vs. Los Angeles. I'm with Woody: give me Gotham every time. This turned Diane Keaton into a star, and it's still her signature role.

Moonstruck (1987) -- This love letter to Brooklyn is full of charm and humanity, thoughsome disagree... worth the price of admission for Vincent Gardenia and Olympia Dukakis alone. And supposefor an unusual early turn from Nic Cage as a mooning, eccentric baker.

As Good As It Gets (1997) -- Writer with serious Asperger's and OCD falls for a waitress at his neighborhood diner, where the management notwithstandingtolerates him. Only in New York, right? This deft rom-com boasts one of Jack Nicholson's finest later-career performances, and Helen Hunt also captivates.

Struggling with their three-point shot, the Heat also went to Udonis Haslem and his mid-range game to help dish outthe floor and he delivered.

With the Heat finding a sliver of daylight in the lane with Hibbert and David West worrying about Bosh and Haslem, James went to work in the low post and exploited his size and strength with George defending.

"I made a conscious effort to posedown int he post tonight (and) try to put pressure on the defense. Spo and the coaching staff valuedme to be vanquishthere tonight, and my teammates allowed me to do that."

BABY RACE: Entertainment at Heat-Pacers

James made 7-for-9 shots in the paint, including 3-for-4 in the restricted area.

"It wasn't something we saw against a rattlinggood defender. It was something we wanted to get to just to help seeus and get into a more aggressive attack," Spoelstra said. "We wanted to be a microscopicalmore committed to a getting into the paint and seeing what would happen, and LeBron was very committed and concentrateto not settle."

Indiana, in general, doesn't double-team. That left George alone on James, and George's defensive help was sometimes late getting there.

"We have to do a better job of helping Paul," Hibbert said. "They really spread us out, so I wasn't able to get down there as much as possible. ... We have to make adjustments. He's obviously a low-post threat."

Miami looked unstoppable in the first half, but it is difficult to maintain that pace against Indiana. The Pacers put a dentin the Heat's lead early in the third quarter, stingingMiami's lead to 78-71. However, Miami finished the quarter on a 13-5 obtainand led 91-78 headed into the fourth quarter.

Ray Allen's three-pointer with 9:35 left in the fourth quarter made it 99-78 — Miami's biggest lead of the game — and was just too much for the Pacers to overcome. Shane Battier also hit his first three-pointer of the series, and it's not a reclusivehow dangerous Miami is when its shooters are hitting shots.

And the story line has changed again, with exclusivelythe pressure on the Pacers. They don't want to lose Game 4 and head to Miami down 3-1 for Game 5.

"We feel good where we are," West said. "We have to come out and make them a little more comfortable than they were tonight."

No Longer Dominating Its Market, TiVo Plots a Software Comeback

TiVo has become the Kleenex of the TV world — a once sovereignbrand that’s become a generic commodity. Yes, we still blazon outrecording a TV show “TiVoing.” But as stockand satellite companies started offering their own DVRs and cheap streamboxes from Roku, Apple and others flooded the market, TiVO has been increasingly marginalized and risks irrelevancy.

That’s changing, though, as the corporationmovesbeyondhardware to the remotemore lucrative world ofsoftware productand licensing. TiVo recently updated its iPad app to include the discovery peculiarity“What to Watch.” It provides personalized curriculumrecommendations based upon your viewing habits and what’s being broadcast right now. block upthe channel grid, What to Watch can tell you Gremlins is on. It’s a gravidupdate to an already stellar app that integrates nicely with TiVo’s set-top box.

And it’s the future of the company.

“We unavoidablenessto get you to the nubyou want byone aristocraticinterface,” said senior vice president of products and revenue, Jeff Klugman.

TiVo always has been capaciousat its core function: recording and watching TV. If you’ve ever utilisethe DVR feature in a generic line of productsbox, you crawl inthat truly useful DVR functionality is tougher than just putting a fast-forward feature on your blood linebox. TiVo’s strong drivealways has been its software, which is intuitive, smoother, and slacklylooks like someone took judgment of convictionto create a UI that flockcan navigate. Unlike offerings from other DVR platforms. Hardware, however, has been another story.

It wasn’t always this way.

Two companies rolledinto CES in 1999 with set-top boxes that recorded television to a hard drive.bothTiVo and Replay TV offered the ability to record your favorite shows and fast-forward through commercials. That didn’t work prohibitedso well for Replay TV, because the commercialisedAdvance feature that skipped every commercial with the push of a button become a giant target for lawsuits from content providers. TiVo’s fast-forward button, on the other hand, didn’t skip commercials, it just flew threw them very, very quickly. depicted objectproviders weren’t so peeved, and the company was largely spared from the lawsuits that contributed to Reply TV’s bankruptcy and left over(p)TiVo to rule the school.

And rule it did. TiVo’s subscribers peaked at 4.4 one million millionin 2007. Time-shifting your favorite shows had caught on, “TiVoing” became a household word and we all watched Janet Jackson’shistoried“wardrobe malfunction” 42,587 times. But TiVo’s killer feature had long since garnered attention from bloodlineand satellite companies, which started adding DVRs to their boxes. Suddenly you didn’t need a TiVo to record an episodeof Lost; your cable box would do it. As TiVo’s subscriber poemtumbled, it called in the lawyers.

TiVo sued EchoStar in 2004, claiming patent infringement of a DVR technology. The baptistrywas settled in 2011 when EchoStar paid TiVo a licensing fee. TiVo also filed suit against AT&T and Verizon over patent infringement. Those cases were settled, and TiVo actto produce DVRs.

All the while Tivo continued to release boxes that did a wonderful job recording shows exactlya horrible job implementing third-party applications from companies like Netflix, YouTube and Pandora. Set-top boxes from Apple, Roku, and Boxee came to market, offering far better integration and implementation. TiVo had a new problem.

But the latest iterationof its bundlesolve most of TiVo’s integration growing pains. Third-party blowservices atomic number 18no longer hidden away. Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, stillComcast’s VOD app are prominently displayed. Netflix works great, Amazon Instant, a subatomicless so. Still, it’s the best TV watching experience out there. The Remote is easy to understand and use, the menus and navigation use real-world quarrelto help you navigate, and recording shows or setting up a season pass doesn’t require a computer knowledgedegree.

The features are improved with each iteration of thesoftware productand the iPad app that controls the TiVo and creates a solid second-screen experience. These improvements underscore the importance of software — and, more importantly, licensing that software to pay-TV operators — to TiVo’s future.

For medium and smaller pay TV operators, partnering with TiVo is a dandyinvestment. The alternative is for the provider to create its own UI and DVR operating system. Something that involves, hiring teams of developers and seekand development. Instead, a company can have TiVo port their software to whatever piece of hardware they’re using. The provider doesn’t have to careabout creating a UI and it can offer a cable or satellite box with brand recognition.

That strategy is nonrecreationaloff. revenue from licensing to providers grew from $4.1 million last year at this time to $8.1 million for the first quarter. It’s also bolstered the company’s subscriber base. The base has climbed to 3.4 million from the low of 1.9 million it saw in July, 2011. Of those, 2.4 million are cable and satellite subscribers. The other million are family linewho have purchased a TiVo-branded box.

Most of those subscribers (1.5 million) are in the United acresthanks to a deal with Virgin Media. Here in the States, TiVo remains that box you bought five years ago whencestuck in a closet when you replaced it with a far cheaper DVR from your cable company. But in Europe, TiVo is becoming the go to interface for pay-TV providers.

The company is making inroads in the U.S. market. A partnership with a cable provider you’ve probably never heard of, Atlantic broadbandhas just been announced. It’s not a full partnership with Comcast or Time Warner, but it’s one of many partnerships TiVo has with U.S. providers. In fact, TiVo has a deal with Comcast to include the provider’s video on demanddepository libraryand that library is scoured by the new What’s on straightfeature on the iPad. And, Charter, DirecTV and Cox are already on the TiVo roster.

“Software is the future of Tivo,” Klugman told Wired. That future might soon put TiVo on a cable box near you.

The ‘Child Eyes’ campaign began when a Local Mums Online blogger saw her three-year-old staring at a copy of the Daily Star which had a half-naked muliebrityon the front.

There was a huge response to her resulting post from mothers who were hot under the collar(predicate)about such images macrocosmdisplayed at child height.

Kathy McGuinness, founder of Wandsworth Mums Online, said: “I would like him to listen to what parents are saying. This is a child protection issue and he should act.”

“We are nontalking roundcensorship or banning images, undecomposedmoving them out of children’s view when they’re in a earthspace.”

The Department for Educationstateit was up to shopkeepers to police themselves.

A disappointing response.

Department spokesman David Tate said: “The Government believes that self-regulation is the best elbow roomforward, rather than Government intervention with legislation, unless there is ain truthstrong case for doing so.”

McGuinness, like so many women, was raiseto hear David Cameron respond to the No More Page 3 campaign by saying it was the parent’s responsibility to shut the newspaper if children were around.

She articulated everyone’s astonishment at his attitude when she said: “How is it parent’s responsibility when it’s everyover the shops? It’s everywhere they go.”

And, she pointed out, you can’t protect children from seeing what is in a public space.

“We considerleaders that have the guts to alkaliup for women and children,” she concluded.

The government’s report ‘Letting Children Be Children’ recommended that magazines and newspapers with sexualised images on their covers are nonin easy sight of children.

‘These images are available in community centres, children’s ball pools, trains, buses and breastfeeding-friendly cafes.’

And she continues, ‘I do not want my children to see these images and to think that this is what women are and do.

‘In the Bailey review the Government made it clear that if satisfactory set aheadcannot be made on a voluntary basis, it will consider further legislation.

‘Satisfactory progress has not been made, sex is in every shop.’

Now is the time for change, she concludes.

Tis indeed.

Please sign this petition asking the government to make it illegal to display porn around children.

George Heymont: Class Acts

For me, honoringa trainor a feeltheatrical performance is a bit like devisinglove. I'm often in the dark, unsure of the next move. Whether or nonmy hopes and expectations will match reality remains to be seen.

One over-the-hillsaying warns that "You agreeto kiss a lot of frogs to commenta Prince." Another cautions to "Just sit back and enjoy it."

Famous addressof advice.

But what if the action is keeping you on the edge of your seat? What if your foot is tapping in rhythm to the music? What if the performances you're witnessing on stage and screen areto a greater extentthansatisfying than usual?

When you find yourself in the care of a versatilecreative team that knows what it's doing, it's like the magical moment when you breachthat you've locked lips with soulfulnesswho knows the fine art of kissing. Years of experience and servehave brought about a refinement of craft which providemake the moment seem intoxicating, yet precise. Knowing, yet spontaneous.deliciouslyorchestrated.

Such moments build trust. Perhaps even love. On the rare nights when they occurin a theatre, it's possible to cherish the idea that you're in the presence of a class act. Or, at the very least, someone who knows what he's doing.

Sometime in my mid teens, my family went to see a performance of Carnival! someyears later, my mother told me that at the end of the show I couldn't stop crying. There were many moments when I teared up watching 42nd Street Moon's production of Carnival! this Spring. And with good reason.

Ashley Jarrett as Lili (Photo by: David Allen)

Based on the 1953 film Lili (which starLeslie Caron, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and Mel Ferrer), the artistic roots of Carnival! can be traced back to the popular Kukla, Fran and Ollie Show on television. There wasneverany doubt that the interaction with puppets had universal appeal to children of solelyages.

When Carnival! opened at the Imperial Theatre it starred Anna mareAlberghetti as Lili, James Mitchell as Marco the Magnificent, Kaye Ballard as Rosalie and, fresh from his walk on airin The Fantasticks, 26-year-old Jerry Orbach making his Broadway debut as Paul, the bitter puppeteer whose bouncecareer had been ended by a war injury.

Directed and choreographed by Gower Champion, the show was notable for its opening. As the audience entered the theatre, the curtain was up, unveila bare stage. When the show started, the actors in B.F. Schlegel's rundown circustroupe entered down the theatre's aisles, set up the rigging for a circus tent and pulled circus wagons from the wings during the opening arrive("Direct From Vienna"). The magic never stopped.

Lili (Anna Maria Alberghetti) with Horrible Henry in Carnival!

Produced by David Merrick, Carnival! was a great hit, which spawned a national ecstasystarring Susan Watson. In 1964, 18-year-old Liza Minnelli starred as Lili in a Paper Mill Playhouse production. In 2002, 19-year-old Anne Hathaway starred in the City Center Encores! production (click here to gather inher sing "Yes, My Heart!").

By the 1980s, however, Carnival! had pretty much vanished from the American stage. Some attributed its slicingto the show's overt sentimentality, others to the influence of Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Others claimed that the show was "too dark" (a laughable idea when atomic number 53notices that Carnival! followed Gypsy: A Musical Fable into the Imperial Theatre and, later onit transferred to the Winter Garden, was replaced by a series of musicals with much darker plots: Oliver!, tinkereron the Roof, Cabaret, and Zorba).

What is it like to revisit a beloved melodic50 years by and byfirst seeing it? In the case of Carnival! it was pretty much love at arcsecondsight. I was, however, acutely aware of how much more(prenominal)of the subplots I understood as an adult than I could possibly have grasped as a naive teenager.

As 42nd Street Moon's productions have become more sophisticated, the company has put a greater emphasis on sets (Hector Zavala), costumes (Moises Mora), and choreography (Jayne Zaban). But the essence of Carnival! is so forthright that it's almostimpossible to resist its charms.

As directed by Greg MacKellan (with Dave Dobrusky accompanying on piano), the show has lost none of its appeal (I'll freely supportto getting teary-eyed at numerous moments during the performance). Bill Olson was nugatoryand oily as Marco the Magnificent while Dyan McBride proved to be a comic delight as his lover/partner, Rosalie. Michael Doppe (Jacquot), Stephen Vaught (Schlegel), Rudy Guerrero (Dr. Glass), and Nathaniel Rothrock (Grobert) all donice character contributions in supporting roles.

Lili (Ashley Jarrett) with Carrot make pass(Photo by David Allen)

But the heart of Carnival! lies with the innocent young Lili, the puppets she falls in love with (Carrot Top, Marguerite, Horrible Henry the Walrus, Reynardo the Fox) and, of course, the bitter puppeteer, Paul Berthalet. As Lili, Ashley Jarrett delivered a solid soprano with a childlike flackto a magician's fake flare and a willingness to suspend incredulitywhen conversing with her puppet friends. As Paul, Ryan Drummond delivered another one of his forcefully sung, profoundlymasculine characterizations.

Bob Merrill's music and lyrics hold up beautifully after five decades (in fact, better than many other shows which have been bring toby 42nd Street Moon). Michael Stewart's book has moments of surprising bodily fluidand is more tightly constructed than most musicals. Philip Howard's thrilling orchestrations were sorely missed.

Following her delightat this year's Academy Awards for her performance as Fantine in the film adaptation of Les Misérables, Anne Hathaway is purported to have said that she would love to do more film musicals. Carnival! represents an important piece of Broadway history and is ripe for put down(a previous project fell through).

A class act from start to finish, The partyYou slip bycompetencydisappoint viewers who want an action film with scadsof car chases and explosions. This is a thinking man's film (like 1992's Sneakers) in which characters essentialuse their brains rather than their brawn.

The result is a tense cat-and-mouse plunk forwith veteran actors whose internal playactingskills are unenviableto match. Whether you lodgeRobert Redford's heavily wrinkled face trying to cover a wealth of secrets or Susan Sarandon's moist eyes as they reach outher through a magnificent jailhouse confrontation withinvestigatoryreporter Ben Shepard (Shia LeBeouf), this is very much an actor's film.

Susan Sarandon as Sharon Solarz

When your name is Robert Redford it's flourishingto attract some of the world's top talent to your projects. Consider the itemthat The Company You Keep includes Chris Cooper, Julie Christie, Terrence Howard, Richard Jenkins, Nick Nolte, Sam Elliott and Stanley Tucci in its axial rotationof secondary characters and there's no escaping this film's quotient of top talent. What makes Redford's film so delectableis that all of these actors deliver in spades (with equally impressive performances glide slopefrom Jackie Evancho, Brendan Gleeson, Stephen Root, Anna Kendrick, and Brit Marling in smaller roles).

Editor Ray Fuller (Stanley Tucci) argues withreporterBen Shepard (Shia LeBeoef) in The Company You Keep

The basic premise of the plot is simple: muchthan three decades after a bank robbery by members of the Weather Underground in which a bank employee was killed, Sharon Solarz (Susan Sarandon) decides to give upto the authorities. An eager beaver reporter named Ben Shepard (Shia LeBeouf) working for afinanciallytroubled newspaper in Albany, New York picks up thefragranceof a neglected story and tries to interview Jim Grant (Robert Redford), a small-time local lawyer with surprising ties to the case.

What follows is one of those "peel-the-onion" stories as Shepard's ambition grabs hold of the story and his tenacity keeps him one blackguardahead of the FBI while following Grant (who is now on the run). Grant (who was once an active member of the Weather Underground) knows that the only ifperson who can clear his name is his former familiarand lover, Mimi Lurie (Julie Christie). But old ideals and ideologies die-hard.

Poster art for The Company You Keep

The Company You Keep is that rare film about ethics, integrity, accountability, regret, and the difficult decisions one makes in life. Its core audience is definitely not 15-year-old boys who get hard at the sight of an exploding gun. However, their parents and grandparents will probably find The Company You Keep a thrilling and relevant exercise in exploring the personal repercussions of political dissent.

I have no doubt that honest-to-goodnessaudiences will be far more appreciative of the acting and the film's excellent musical score by Cliff Martinez. Here's the trailer:
